Finnish bass-baritone, Tuomas Pursio, studied at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki before continuing his studies at the International Opera Studio in Zurich. His teachers include Jukka Rasilainen, Laszlo Polgar, Tom Krause, and Elisabeth Werres.
Following permanent engagements in Düsseldorf and Erfurt, Pursio remains a member of ensemble at the Opera Leipzig since 2002/03.

Tuomas Pursio worked with conductors such as Christian Thielemann, Riccardo Chailly, Philippe Jordan, Marek Janowski, Riccardo Frizza, John Fiore, Nello Santi, Adam Fischer, Ralf Weikert, Ulf Schirmer, Axel Kober, Osmo Vänskä, Sebastian Weigle and Marcello Viotti.

Guest performances led him, among others, to the Staatsoper Unter den Linden Berlin, Stuttgart, Hannover, Zurich, Budapest, Antwerp, Helsinki, Lausanne, Wiesbaden, Nice as well as to the Savonlinna Opera Festival and the Festival Auvers-sur-Oise. At this institutions he took over the roles of Escamillo/Carmen, Musiklehrer/Ariadne auf Naxos, Don Giovanni/Don Giovanni, Kaspar/Der Freischütz, Orest/Elektra, Amfortas/Parsifal, Förster/Das schlaue Füchslein, Don Alfonso/Cosi fan tutte, Nick Shadow/The Rake’s Progress, Scarpia/Tosca, Wotan/Das Rheingold as well as the Villains in Les Contes d‘Hoffmann.

His concert repertoire ranges from Haydn and Beethoven over Verdi and Mahler up to contemporary Finnish composers. Furthermore, he sang Verdi’s Requiem in Leipzig and a highly acclaimed concert series together with Marek Janowski and the Rundfunksinfonieorchester Berlin.

Highlights include Mephisto/Faust atOper Leipzig and the Savonlinna Opera Festival, Jochanaan/Salome at Landestheater Linz as well as Friedrich/Das Liebesverbot and Raimondo/Rienzi as part of the guest performances of the Oper Leipzig in Bayreuth. In addition, he sang the role of Friedrich in the same production at the Teatro Verdi in Triest, too.

Last season, he took over numerous roles as a member of the ensemble of the Oper Leipzig, such as Wotan/Das Rheingold, Alberich/Siegfried and Gunther/Götterdämmerung under Ulf Schirmer, Amfortas/Parsifal, Scarpia/Tosca, Jochanaan/Salome, Kaspar/Der Freischütz and Wassermann/Rusalka. Furthermore, he made his role debut in the title role of Bluebeard's Castle

In the season 2018/19, Tuomas Pursio can be heard and seen in folling roles at the Oper Leipzig: Orest/Elektra, Kaspar/Der Freischütz, Speaker/Die Zauberflöte, Alberich/Siegfried, Gunther/Götterdämmerung, Wotan/Das Rheingold and Wassermann/Rusalka. Moreover, he’ll give guest performance as Scarpia/Tosca at Finnish National Opera Helsinki and as Jochanaan/Salome at Teatro Communale di Bologna.

His CD-recordings include Schumann’s Manfred with Mario Venzago, Un Ballo in Maschera with Riccardo Chailly, and Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg with Marek Janowski.

Role variety in Finland, Italy and Germany
Following his great success as Méphistophélès in Gounod‘s Faust at this year’s Opera Festival in Savonlinna, Tuomas Pursio is now on stage as a villain at the Finnish National Opera in Helsinki – this time as a diabolic Scarpia in Puccini’s Tosca. Performance dates: 07./13./19./21./25./27.09. and 06./13./16./18.10.
From the far north southwards: In February, Pursio will take on the role of Jochanaan/Salome at Teatro Comunale di Bologna. Premiere: 15.02.
In this role he can also be seen and heard at his parent house, the Opera Leipzig, where he will also be performing the roles of Orest/Elektra, Kaspar/Der Freischütz, Sprecher/Zauberflöte, Alberich/Siegfried, Gunther/Götterdämmerung, Wotan/Rheingold, and Water Goblin/Rusalka.
