BiographyLauded by the Baltimore Sun for his “impassioned phrasing” and a “ping in [the] voice that pays dividends,” tenor Matthew Grills makes a company and role debut at the Opéra national de Lorraine as Idreno in Semiramide in the 2016-17 season. He also returns to Bayerische Staatsoper as a member of the company’s ensemble, where his roles include Pedrillo in Die Entführung aus dem Serail, Brighella in Ariadne auf Naxos, the Doctor in The Fiery Angel, Liverotta in Lucrezia Borgia, Edgar Evans in Srnka’s South Pole, among others. In addition, he returns to the States for further performances of Pedrillo in Die Entführung aus dem Serail with Atlanta Opera and sings the Berio orchestration of Verdi’s 8 Romanze with the Orchestre de la Haute Ecole de musique de Genève. Future engagements include his Seattle Opera debut in a leading Rossini role. Last season, he returned to San Francisco Opera as Tobias Ragg in Sweeney Todd as well as to the Bayerische Staatsoper for numerous roles.
His American performances in recent seasons include Nemorino in L’elisir d’amore with Portland Opera, Fenton in Falstaff with Wolf Trap Opera, and Almaviva in family performances of Il barbiere di Siviglia and Nathaniel in Les contes d'Hoffmann with San Francisco Opera. Prior to joining the ensemble at the Bayerische Staatsoper, he was a member of the company’s prestigious Opernstudio and sang title role of Le comte Ory and Fabrizio in Martinů’s Mirandolina in the historic Cuvilliés Theatre, Ernesto in Donizetti’s Il giovedì grasso at the Schloss Nymphenberg, as well as a number of roles on the mainstage, including his first performances of Pedrillo in Die Entführung aus dem Serail. He sang a solo recital at the Terrace Theater at the Kennedy Center presented by the Vocal Arts D.C. and the Washington Performing Arts Society and recently joined the Hartford Symphony Orchestra for Handel’s Messiah.
Mr. Grills is a 2012 grand-prize winner of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions. As a Resident Artist with Portland Opera, he also sang Goffredo in Rinaldo in addition to covering Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni. He is also a former Resident Artist with Santa Fe Opera, where he sang the role of Frank Harris in workshops of Morrison's Oscar in advance of the opera's world premiere as well as scenes of Rinuccio in Gianni Schicchi and Belmonte in Die Entführung aus dem Serail. He has sung previous performances of Ferrando in Così fan tutte at the Seagle Music Colony.
The tenor holds a Master of Music degree from the Eastman School of Music where his performances included Jenik in The Bartered Bride and a Bachelor of Music from The Boston Conservatory where he sang Prunier in La Rondine, Prince Charmant in Cendrillon, and Robert in Hindemith's Hin und zurück in addition to scenes of the title role of Candide, Tamino in Die Zauberflöte, and Lindoro in L'Italiana in Algeri. In addition to the Metropolitan Opera National Council auditions, the tenor has won first prize in the 2012 Lotte Lenya Competition and the 2011 Jessie Kneisel Lieder Competition.
