Biography

Magdalena Klein is an up-and-coming German conductor who has made a name for herself with a broad repertoire ranging from classical to contemporary music. She works as a freelance conductor with renowned orchestras in Germany and abroad and is also musical director of the Hannover Symphony Orchestra.

Engagements in recent seasons have taken her to the Düsseldorf Symphony Orchestra, the Wuppertal Symphony Orchestra, the Hof Symphony Orchestra, the Neue Philharmonie Westfalen, the Göttingen Symphony Orchestra and the Wernigerode Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra, among others. She made her international debut in 2022 with orchestras in Egypt and Mexico.

In the 2024/25 season, she will make her debuts with the Orchestre de chambre de Paris, the Beethovenorchester Bonn and the Jena Philharmonic Orchestra. Repeated invitations attest to her growing reputation, for example with the Göttinger Symphonie Orchester and the Neue Philharmonie Westfalen.

From 2019 to 2023, Magdalena Klein was musical assistant to the Bochum Symphony Orchestra. There she conducted alongside General Music Directors Steven Sloane and Tung-Chieh Chuang, among others, and worked with conductors such as John Storgårds, Anja Bihlmaier, Kazuki Yamada, Olari Elts, Giedrė Šlekytė, Hans Graf and other renowned personalities.

She received important impulses in masterclasses with Riccardo Muti, Paavo and Kristjan Järvi, Thomas Hengelbrock and Sir Roger Norrington. In 2023, she was selected by Riccardo Muti to take part in his Conducting Academy at the Spring Festival in Tokyo, where she conducted Verdi's Un Ballo in Maschera. In the same year, she also took part in Thomas Hengelbrock's Conductor's Academy in Fontainebleau. In 2021, she was already a participant in the renowned Järvi Academy in Estonia.

Her artistic career is characterised by a sound education: she completed two master's degrees - in orchestral conducting and choral conducting. Her studies have taken her to Hanover, Florence, Berlin and San Francisco, among other places. At the Berlin University of the Arts, she studied orchestral conducting at the International Conducting Academy with Prof Steven Sloane and Prof Harry Curtis. During this time, she founded the orchestr.insîéme ensemble, with which she realised numerous concerts from 2016 to 2019.

Magdalena Klein is also an accomplished choral conductor. From 2019 to 2023, she was musical director of the Bochum Philharmonic Choir. Her concert with Brahms' German Requiem was hailed by the press as “hard to beat in terms of melodiousness”. She gained further experience with renowned choirs such as the San Francisco Symphony Chorus and Chorwerk Ruhr as well as through her work at the San Francisco Opera.

She is the only female conductor to have been accepted into the Rudolf Augstein Foundation's re:balance mentoring programme, which is dedicated to promoting equality in the arts. In 2019, she was also a finalist in the conducting competition of German music academies in Nuremberg.
