Biography

The celebrated mezzo-soprano Franziska Gottwald is a regular guest at many German opera houses - and international festivals. She collaborates regularly with the Staatstheater Wiesbaden where she has sung Cherubino/Figaro's Wedding, Hansel/ Hansel and Gretel, Ruggiero/Alcina and Orfeo/Orfeo ed Euridice. She has made guest appearances at the Staatstheater Hannover and the Cologne Opera as Sesto in Mozart's La clemenza di Tito, Ruggiero/Alcina and Prince Orlofsky/Die Fledermaus at Staatstheater Stuutgart aswell as Arsamenes in Stefan Herheims production Xerxes under Konrad Junghänel at Komische Oper Berlin. Internationally, she has appeared at Theater Basel as the title character in Händel's Ariodante under the baton of Andrea Marcon, and also as Cherubino/Le nozze di Figaro and Alcina in Vivaldi's Orlando furioso - in Toulouse she was heard as Zaida in Rossini's Il turco in Italia under the baton of Attilio Cremonesi.

She has already appeared at the Göttingen International Händel Festival as Erissena in Poro and Irene in Tamerlano, and at the beginning of the 2020/21 season she will once again appear in Göttingen as Eduige in the festival opera Rodelinda under the musical direction of Laurence Cummings. The virtuoso baroque singer was also a guest as Damira in Vivaldi's La Verità in Cimento at the festival "Winter in Schwetzingen" and also as Arsace at the Händel Festival Halle.

Concert tours have taken her to Stavanger/ Norway, Yokohama/ Japan, London (Barbican Hall), Amsterdam, Madrid and Basel, among others. Musical partners were often Andrea Marcon and Fabio Biondi. In Israel Franziska Gottwald sang Dvorak's Biblical Songs under the baton of Avner Biron. She also performed Mahler's 4th Symphony under Daniele Giorgi in Italy.

The mezzo-soprano is a 1st prize winner of the Leipzig Bach Competition and has made an international name for herself as a concert singer, especially in the field of historically informed performance practice, through many years of collaboration with conductors such as Reinhard Goebel, Ton Koopman, Andrea Marcon, Fabio Biondi, Konrad Junghänel, Christoph Spering and many others.

Franziska Gottwald has been a guest at outstanding orchestras such as the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, the Venice Baroque Orchestra, the Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, Musica Antiqua Köln, Concerto Köln, the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin and the Bamberger Symphoniker.

In the past years appeared among others the CD productions: Merope by Vivaldi under Fabio Biondi and L'Olimpiade: The Opera under Markellos Chryssikos. Also worth mentioning are the recordings of Händel's Samson under Nicholas McGegan, Mendelssohn's ECHO-winning Elijah and Salieri's La Passione under Christoph Spering, as well as the recording of all Brahms duets for female voices with Letizia Scherrer and Ferenc Bognar, piano. Also recorded on DVD are productions of Galuppi's L'Olimpiade/Licida in Venice and Vivaldi's Motezuma/Fernando.

Handel's Xerxes. Baroque ancient times at Komische Oper Berlin
Franziska Gottwald took on the role of Arsamenes in Händel’s Xerxes at Komische Oper Berlin over the course of six nights. The production by Stefan Herheim, which has been celebrated as a “theater wonder”, included Stephanie Houtzeel in the title role and baroque specialist Konrad Junghänel at the conductor’s stand.
