BiographyBaritone Elliott Carlton Hines, a native of Houston, Texas, is a recent graduate of The Juilliard School, and is currently in his second year as a member of the "Internationales Opernstudio Gerard Mortier" at the Salzburger Landestheater. Hines' spectrum of work at the Landestheater has included Morales/Dancaïro in Carmen, Masetto in Don Giovanni, and Il Poeta in Il Turco in Italia. In the 2016-17 season, Hines will perform the role of Schaunard in La Bohème (under Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla) in the Haus für Mozart, in addition to the role of Sparbüchsen Bill in Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny at the Landestheater (under Adrian Kelly).
In the summer of 2016, Hines premiered the role of Man One in David Blake and Keith Warner’s new opera, Icarus, at the Cantiere Internazionale d’Arte Montepulciano. As a master's student at The Juilliard School, Hines performed the roles of Farasmane in Händel’s Radamisto and Pasek in Janacek’s Cunning Little Vixen.
In addition to opera, Hines has also sung the bass solos in Bach’s St. Matthew Passion (under Gary Thor Wedow) and Christmas Oratorio (at the Oregon Bach Festival), as well as the role of Lucifero in Handel’s La Resurrezione (under William Christie). Hines was also a Lied Stipendiat at the Heidelberger Frühling in both 2015 and 2016.
Most recently, Hines performed the Duruflè Requiem in Houston, as well as Händel’s Messiah in Salzburg and in Munich’s Herkulessaal.
As of season 2018/19, Elliott Carlton Hines is a member of the opera studio of Staatsoper Stuttgart. At this house he’ll take over roles, such as, Kilian/Der Freischütz, Wagner/Mefistofele, Carlotto/Don Pasquale, Aufseher des Thoas/Iphigénie en Tauride, Perückenmacher/Ariadne auf Naxos, as well as Herr Eiler/Der Schauspieldirektor.
Hines received his B.M. in Voice from Oberlin Conservatory, and has also worked as a Young Artist with Opera Theater of St. Louis, Da Camera of Houston, and at the Internationale Meistersinger Akademie (IMA).
