Biography

The Finnish tenor Dan Karlström graduated from the Business School of Åbo Academy before starting his singing studies at the Sibelius-Academy with Anssi Hirvonen in Helsinki. He has since then worked with Prof. Herbert Brauer in Berlin as well as visited master classes with Jaakko Ryhänen, Tom Krause and Elisabeth Werres.

His first ensemble contract took him to the Schillertheater NRW and to the Staatstheater Darmstadt. 
He was also invited to Bayreuth, Wiesbaden, Erfurt, Münster, Weimar, Chemnitz, Dresden, Savonlinna, Helsinki, Beijing, and to the Komische Oper Berlin.
Since 2001, Karlström is a stable member of the ensemble of the Opera Leipzig.
 
Dan Karlström debuted at the Finnish national Opera as Tobias/Sweeney Todd and since then performed as a guest at several occasions, including as Pedrillo/Die Entführung aus dem Serail and as Yonas in the opera Adriana Mater by Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho. In addition, he is a regular guest at the Savonlinna Opera Festival, where he performed in roles like Monostatos/Zauberflöte, the Four Servants/Les contes d’Hoffmann, Remendado/Carmen, Simpleton/Boris Godunov, and Goro/Madama Butterfly.
 
He worked with conductors such as Esa-Pekka Salonen, Marc Albrecht, Ralf Weikert, Asher Fisch and Sakari Oramo and with directors such as Peter Sellars, Claus Guth, Robert Carsen, Dietrich Hilsdorf and Francisco Negrín. In the concert field, projects of past seasons included works by Bach, Beethoven, Händel, Mozart, Rossini, and Orff.
 
Dan Karlström’s broad repertoire includes numerous parts out of Opera, Operetta and Musical, including David/Die Meistersinger, Mime/Rheingold and Siegfried, Walter von der Vogelweide/Tannhäuser, Steuermann/Der fliegende Holländer, Truffaldino/The Love for Three Oranges, Tamino/Die Zauberflöte, Cassio/Otello, and Judas/Jesus Christ Superstar.

Highlights of the past seasons include Mime/Rheingold and Siegfried, Luzio/Das Liebesverbot, Hexe/Hänsel und Gretel, Monostatos/Die Zauberflöte, Don Basilio/Le nozze di Figaro, Prince/Lulu and Hunter/Rusalka at Opera Leipzig, Goro/Madama Butterfly at Staatsoper Unter den Linden Berlin, the title role in Zemlinsky’s Der Zwerg at Theater Chemnitz, as well as Don Basilio/Le nozze di Figaro, Goro/Madama Butterfly and Kimmo in Sallinen’s Kullervo at the opera festival in Savonlinna.

As an ensemble member, also in season 2018/19 Karlström will be on stage in numerous roles at Opera Leipzig, including Mime/Das Rheingold and Siegfried, Steuermann/Der fliegende Holländer, Hexe/Hänsel und Gretel, Don Basilio/Le nozze di Figaro, Pong/Turandot, Spoletta/Tosca, Normanno/Lucia di Lammermoor, Monostatos/Die Zauberflöte, and Four Servants/Les contes d’Hoffmann.
In addition to his engagement in Leipzig, Karlström will be a guest with Finnish National Opera Helsinki as Lindorf, Coppélius, Dapertutto and Dr. Miracle/Les contes d’Hoffmann , with Dresden’s Semperoper as Don Basilio/Le nozze di Figaro, as well as with the Grand Théâtre de Geneve as Mime in Wagner’s Ring.

Busy busy
Dan Karlström has a busy season ahead of him. Higlights include his return to Semperoper Dresden as Basilio in Le nozze di Figaro, The 4 Valets in The Tales of Hoffmann at the Finnish National Opera in Helsinki, his debut at Grand Théatre de Genève as Mime in the Ring revival, as well as Mime in the new Ring-cycle in Helsinki under the baton of Esa-Pekka Salonen, starting in September 2019.
At his parent house, Oper Leipzig, he will perform in a number of roles; including Steuermann and Wenzel in the new productions of Der fliegende Holländer and The Bartered Bride, Knusperhexe in Hansel and Gretel, Mime in the Ring-Cycle, Pong in Turandot and the Tenor-arias in the ballet-version of Bach´s St. John Passion.
