Biography

The Austrian-New Zealand bass Anthony Robin Schneider is a multifaceted artist with a flexible, powerful yet velvety voice, who excels at combining musicality and expression in Opera and Concert Repertoire from all eras, with a particular affinity for Mozart, Wagner, and Verdi.

Schneider has been an Ensemble Member of Oper Frankfurt since 2019, where he will be singing the title role in Barry Kosky’s upcoming production of Hercules (Handel). There, he has had great success in the roles of King Henry (Lohengrin), Bartolo (Le nozze di Figaro), The grand inquisitor (Don Carlo), and Sparafucile (Rigoletto). He also sang an intimate recital with Anne Larlee in Oper Frankfurt’s Holzfoyer, with repertoire from Schubert, Finzi and Moussorgsky.

For the summers of 2021 to 2024, Schneider will appear in Brigitte Fassbender’s highly praised production of Wagner’s Ring at the Tiroler Festpiele Erl, where he will sing the roles of Fafner (Das Rheingold, Siegfried), and Hunding (Die
Walküre) under the musical direction of Erik Nielsen. In the summer of 2023 in Erl, he will also be singing Bruckner’s Te Deum and Rossini’s Stabat Mater.

In the 23/24 season, he will portray King Henry (Lohengrin) in a new staging by Christof Loy at the Dutch National Opera.

In February 2022, he appeared as Sarastro/Speaker (The Magic Flute) with Houston Grand Opera. Other guest appearances also include the Ghost of Hector (Les Troyens) in David McVicar’s Vienna State Opera production, and Truffaldino (Ariadne auf Naxos) at Santa Fe Opera and the Cleveland Orchestra.

In the 22/23 season, Schneider made two house debuts with jump-ins: at the Staatstheater Braunschweig as Fafner (Das Rheingold), and at the Semperoper Dresden as Sarastro (The magic flute). That same season, he sang Mozart’s Requiem with the Cleveland Orchestra under Franz Welser-Möst. His concert repertoire also includes Beethoven’s 9th Symphony (hr-Sinfonieorchester 2022,
New Zealand Symphony Orchestra 2018 and 2019), Handel’s The Messiah (Edmonton Symphony Orchestra), and Haydn’s Creation (Frankfurter Oper- und Museumsorchester 2020).
