The Australian tenor, Michael Smallwood, commenced vocal training while completing a law degree at the University of Melbourne. After studies at the Victorian College of the Arts, the Australian National Academy of Music, and New York’s Juilliard School, he entered the prestigious Opera Studio of the Hamburg State Opera in 2001, later becoming a member of the ensemble.

He was a guest at the opera houses of Santa Fe, Paris, Glyndebourne, Amsterdam, Lyon, Dijon, Chicago, Karlsruhe, Barcelona, Kassel, and Berlin (Staatsoper and Komische Oper) and regularly returns to Staatsoper Hamburg. Festival appearances include Ravinia Festival, Aspen, Melbourne International Festival of the Arts, RuhrTriennale, Lincoln Center Festival, and the Händel Festspiele (Halle and Karlsruhe).  

In opera and concert, he has worked with renowned conductors such as Yves Abel, Richard Farnes, Vladimir Jurowski, Friedemann Layer, Ingo Metzmacher, Julius Rudel, Ulf Schirmer, Steven Sloane, Stefan Soltesz, Constantinos Carydis, Ilan Volkov, Alfred Eschwe, Josep Pons, Karl-Heinz Steffens, Marek Janowski, Michael Boder, Sir Simon Rattle, and Tomas Netopil.
Michael Smallwood is also a sought-after performer of baroque music and frequently works with William Christie, Alessandro de Marchi, Hermann Max, Michael Hofstetter, Jane Glover, Thomas Hengelbrock, Andreas Spering, and Konrad Junghaenel.
His broad repertoire spans from Monteverdi´s Orfeo, Händel’s Acis, Grimoaldo/Rodelinda, Lurcanio/Ariodante, and Oronte/Alcina through Mozart’s Tamino, Belmonte, Ferrando, Don Ottavio, and Arbace, Gluck’s Orphee and Renaud/Armide to Wagner’s David, von Flotow’s Lyonel/Martha, Verdi’s Fenton, Strauss´ Flamand and Henry Morosus/Die Schweigsame Frau, Kudrjas/Káťa Kabanová, Lysander and Flute/A Midsummer Night´s Dream, and Albert Herring, Berg’s Andres/Wozzeck, and Maler/Lulu. Furthermore, he has sung numerous contemporary works.

From 2013 until 2016, Michael Smallwood was a member of the ensemble at Essen’s renowned Aalto Theater, focusing on the works of Mozart (Tamino, Ottavio, Ferrando, Belmonte, Arbace), Handel (Lurcanio/Ariodante), and Strauss (Brighella/Ariadne, Henry Morosus/Die Schweigsame Frau). In 2014, concerts led him to Australia, France, and Germany; in the season 2015/16 he returned to the stages of Berlin´s Komische Oper and Staatsoper as well as Opera Halle, and during the season of 2016/17, he could be heard at houses such as Nederlandse Reisopera. Further projects comprise engagements at Staatsoper Berlin, including the role of 1st Grail Knight/Parsifal under Daniel Barenboim, and at the Opéra de Dijon.

The season 2017/18 is shaped by engagements in Berlin and Paris. At Staatsoper unter den Linden he will be performing the roles of Monostatos/Zauberflöte, 2nd Jude/Salome under the musical direction of Zubin Mehta, as well as 1st Grail Knight/Parsifal under Daniel Barenboim as part of the Festtage in Berlin. At the Opéra National de Paris, Smallwood will be on stage as 3rd Esquire/Parsifal with Philippe Jordan at the conductor’s stand.

House debut at Theater an der Wien with René Jacobs
At the beginning of the new season, Michael Smallwood will give his house debut at the Theater an der Wien as Monostatos / 2nd Priest and 1st  Armoured Man/Die Zauberflöte. The new production of Thorsten Fischer and with René Jacobs at the conductor's stand celebrates its premiere on 17th of September. Further performances take place on the following dates: 23rd/26th and 28th of September.
