Biography

The Finnish tenor and Åbo native, Dan Karlström, studied at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki and later worked with Prof. Herbert Brauer in Berlin as well as in master classes with Jaakko Ryhänen, Tom Krause and Elisabeth Werres.

Following first ensemble contracts in Wuppertal and at Staatstheater Darmstadt, he is a stable member of the ensemble of Opera Leipzig since 2001, his roles including Mime/Der Ring des Nibelungen, David/Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, Steuermann/Der fliegende Holländer, Luzio/Das Liebesverbot, Gingerbread Witch/Hansel and Gretel, Monostatos/Die Zauberflöte, Don Basilio/Le nozze di Figaro, Prinz/Lulu, Spoletta/Tosca, Pong/Turandot, Goro/Madama Butterfly, and Hunter/Rusalka.

In addition, his broad repertoire includes numerous parts out of Opera, Operetta and Musical, including Walter von der Vogelweide/Tannhäuser, Truffaldino/The Love for Three Oranges, Tamino/Die Zauberflöte, Cassio/Otello, and Judas/Jesus Christ Superstar.

Guest engagements led him to renowned institutions including the Dresden Semperoper (Don Basilio/Le nozze di Figaro, Goro/Madama Butterfly), Staatsoper Unter den Linden Berlin (Spoletta/Tosca, Wirt/Der Rosenkavalier, Harry/La fanciulla del West), Komische Oper Berlin, Theater Chemnitz (title role in Zemlinsky’s Der Zwerg), Grand Théâtre de Genève (Mime/Ring), Hungarian State Opera in Budapest, as well as the Bayreuth festival.

He is carrying a close connection to the Finnish National Opera in Helsinki, where he made his debut as Tobias in Sweeney Todd and since then took on roles such as Lindorf, Coppelius, Dapertutto and Dr. Miracle/Les Contes d’Hoffmann, Pedrillo/Die Entführung aus dem Serail, and Yonas in Kaija Saariaho’s Adriana Mater.
Furthermore, he is a welcome guest at the Savonlinna Opera Festival, where he performed in roles like Monostatos/Zauberflöte, Don Basilio/Le nozze di Figaro, Remendado/Carmen, Goro/Madama Butterfly, as well as Kimmo in Sallinen’s Kullervo.

His concert repertoire includes key works by J. S. Bach, Handel, Mozart, Rossini, Beethoven, and Orff.

Dan Karlström collaborated with conductors such as Marc Albrecht, Ralf Weikert, Asher Fisch, Sakari Oramo, Patrick Fournillier, Ulf Schirmer, and Christoph Gedschold, and with directors like Peter Sellars, Claus Guth, Robert Carsen, and Francisco Negrín.

As an ensemble member, Karlström has been on stage in numerous roles at Opera Leipzig in the 22/23 season, including Spoletta/Tosca, Veit in the new staging of Albert Lortzing’s Undine, Witch/Hansel and Gretel, Roderigo in the new staging of Otello, Boles/Peter Grimes, and Goro/Madama Butterfly. In addition, he sang Mime/Siegfried and Pong/Turandot in two new productions at the Finnish National Opera.

Clic clac! Hoffmann in Halle
Voilà, voilà Kleinzach! The new season begins with an absolute highlight for Dan Karlström! For the first time he can be heard in the title role of The Tales of Hoffmann, the beloved opéra fantastique by Jacques Offenbach, at Opera Halle.

The new staging by Opera Halle's own director, Walter Sutcliffe, is conducted by José Miguel Esandi and celebrates its premiere on September 16, 2023.
